A free account is needed only for optional extras: reading a photo of a real board in the best move finder (screenshots are read in your browser and need no account), the AI explanation of a position (one a day free, then 1 credit), saving a position to your account, and Save to my games in game analysis, which keeps the game and its analysis in your account.
Does ScanChess upload my PGN files or custom board positions to a server?
No. PGN parsing, move validation, engine analysis and diagram rendering all happen inside your browser. Something is sent only when you ask for it: a photo the best move finder cannot read on your device, the position and engine lines behind an AI explanation, a position you save to your account, a game and its analysis you save to your games, and the Chess.com or Lichess username Chess Wrapped looks up on those sites.
How do I convert a physical, handwritten paper scoresheet into digital PGN?
Photograph the scoresheet and upload it to the ScanChess scanner. It reads the handwriting, replays every move against the rules, marks anything it is unsure of for you to check, and gives you a PGN to export. A scoresheet scan costs 2 credits; new accounts get 10 free.
